Jai was raised in a large extended British-Indian family in the West London suburban district of Southall. From an early age, he was groomed to run one of his family’s several convenience stores. He married his childhood sweetheart, Mala Makkar, in 1992, and a year later, they became parents when their son, Samuel, was born. In 1995, he emigrated with his young family to the United States when he was tasked with running his family’s party store in Chicago. In 2003, he became a father for the second time when Mala gave birth to their daughter, Aaliyah. However, their marriage went through trials and tribulations due to their obligations and aspirations, which ultimately resulted in their separation in 2015.

He later moved to Radcliffe in hopes of repairing his marriage and reuniting his family. He also purchased a grocery store, J&M. Though he and Mala eventually divorced, Jai moved on and became involved with fellow divorcée Louise Saunders Lockhart, a development Aaliyah did not take well, as she wanted her parents to reunite. Jai proposed to Louise, and she accepted, though both remained close to their respective exes.

Aaliyah ultimately exposed Sean and Louise making out at Jai and Louise’s engagement party, which led to their breakup. Shortly thereafter, Jai and Mala ended up back in bed together, where they realized they still belonged together, ultimately reconciling and remarrying in 2024.
