Born Mala Makkar, she grew up in the west London suburban district of Southall. As a youth, she was a bit of a wild child getting into night clubs with fake ids and experimenting with drugs. Eventually, Mala matured and started to focus on her studies. After graduating from university. She marries Jai Gupta, in 1992 and the next year they welcomed their son, Samuel.

In 1995, the young family moved abroad to the United States when Jai takes over running his family's party store in Chicago. Mala climbed up the ranks in her field as an architect. And in 2003, she gave birth to a daughter named Aaliyah. Becoming career-orientated strongly affected her once loving marriage to Jai, and in 2015, they decided to separate. Two months ago, she was offered the position at the Covington Group as a senior architect in Radcliffe, Kentucky, in which she has accepted.
