The more reserved of the Lockhart fraternal twins, Tanner was a former equestrian who had put more focus on the violin. Before the series, her once strong friendship ended with Jordan McKnight due to the now popular Jordan labeling her as uncool. So, when she found out that her parents' once-solid marriage was coming undone, mainly due to her father's unfaithfulness, she became distant from him. At the same time, she found herself getting close to her new classmate, Tommy Covington. Despite their families' long and sordid history, they managed to maintain a friendship, and eventually, they became each other's first loves.
However, when it comes to first love, the road isn't quite as smooth as Tanner was reluctant to be sexually active with Tommy as she wanted to wait until it was the right time. When she went away for the summer to participate in a summer youth program in Boston, Tommy got closer to Jordan and, unbeknownst to Tanner, the two of them kissed during the wedding reception of his brother's wedding.
When her father married Tricia in Oahu, the two, along with close friends and family, made the journey there. Tommy tried to talk to her into sleeping with him, but she became upset, and it was then that he told her about his kiss with Jordan the previous year. The two had broken up but got back together on Christmas Day when he pleaded with her to give them a second chance, which she accepted. Nonetheless, on the night of the Fourth of July, when they had gone away to sleep together for the first time, he confessed to her that he had only slept with Jordan but was the father of the baby she had given birth to that night. A furious Tanner broke up with him once again. Though the two have maintained their friendship, those feelings she thought were gone might not be so easy to hide.
