When her dreams of music stardom didn't happen, Martha Saunders returned home to Radcliffe from Los Angeles without much to show for it, except for the fact that she had gotten pregnant from her fling with Murray Hirsch, the nephew of her talent manager. The majority of her family was supportive of her choice to bring up the baby alone, except for her father, who was adamant about Murray being in the life of the child. However, it never came to fruition because Murray refused to have anything to do with the baby. The baby was delivered by Steven in the back of his truck during a traffic jam. She named her son Steven "SJ" Saunders to honor him. Martha has been maintaining a balance between being a single working mother who has returned to her first love, which is music.
As a result of her father's passing away, she inherited twenty percent of the farm as well as a monetary inheritance. Her romantic life, however, hadn't been successful since her attraction to houseguest Will Jackson proved to be one-sided, but, unbeknownst to her, he had feelings for her as well but was determined not to tell her because of his history.
