Six months before the start of the serial, Steven Sullivan had moved back to his ancestral household on Franklin Farm in Radcliffe from Lexington when his marriage to ballet dancer Lorraine ended. Although, he regretted leaving behind his five-year-old son Evan. The veterinarian first met Courtney Covington in his mother's office at the stables. The two soon became attracted to one another despite their considerable difference in age. He didn't know that she was a member of the Covington family. Their families have never gotten along, so their dating hasn't been well received. Especially since Esther has been trying to obtain Daniel's share of Franklin Farm Ltd by any means.

It also angered him when Courtney hid the truth of her being a Covington from him. However, they managed to overcome that and became serious about one another. Lorraine and Evan came into town unexpectedly. But he was thrilled to spend more time with his son. Unaware of Daniel's plan of having Courtney break up with him by having her walk in on Lorraine kissing him in exchange for granting his ex-wife an audition with the American Ballet Theatre. At the last minute, Lorraine told him about the plan. And when Courtney found out she temporarily moved out of Home Farm when she found out about his deception. Steven once more said goodbye to his son when Lorraine got a teaching job at a performing arts school in Orlando. He and Courtney have remained together ever since despite their families' dislike for the other. He delivered his cousin Martha's baby in the backseat of his truck in the middle of a traffic jam on the freeway. She named his son after him and is also the baby's godfather. He went to Orlando with his mother when Lorraine and Evan were in a serious car accident. Evan came to stay with him as his ex-wife can recover from her injuries.

Revealing to Courtney that he doesn't want to get married again. His girlfriend isn't pleased about that fact. But nothing could prepare him for losing one of the most important male figures in his life when his uncle Peter passes away from a massive heart attack. He also didn't expect his beloved uncle to leave him 10 % of the family's dairy farm business.
