JOJO'S CAFE
"When We Stand Together" by Nickelback is currently playing on the sound system inside of Jojo's Café on this autumn weekday afternoon. Tanner Lockhart found relief in that it wasn't a lot of customers occupying the space. As soon as she got out of her last class of the day, she received a text from Tommy stating he wanted to meet up here to get started on their assignment for "Living With The Arts" she still can't believe Professor Barker had the nerve to assign her to partner up with her ex-boyfriend.
The thought of having to work with someone who you thought you could trust despite his womanizing past, who hurt her further by getting her ex-best friend pregnant the night of her father's wedding in Oahu last year.
So that is why she has an iced coffee while sitting at the lounge area, wishing he would cancel, but knows it would be postponing the inevitable meeting.
"Hey, I hope I'm not too late," Tommy Covington says to her. He got stuck in traffic on his way from campus.
Tanner crosses her legs. "No, I just got here about ten minutes ago myself."
The two of them feels the awkward tension in the room as he sits adjacent to her in the chair where he opens his backpack,
"So I think we should start with research on Bob Marley. I mean, Professor Barker didn't give us an exact outline to focus on," Tommy says
Tanner could never forget how much effort he puts into his academics, which is the reason why he has been on the Dean's List since freshman year,
So for five minutes, the two go on their various tech items to investigate one of the pioneers of reggae music.
The inconvenient sound of someone clearing their throat near them gets both of the college sophomores to lift their heads to see Tricia Lockhart with arms folded across her chest, not holding back her confusion as to why the two of them are together.
"Is there something you need, Tricia?" Tanner asks of her stepmother, whom she has never been close with, for several apparent reasons, including knowing she kept her in the dark regarding the entire Tommy and Jordan situation.
"Your friend didn't show for his shift again; do you have any idea of where he can be?"
Tanner exchanges a glance of uncertainty with Tommy before they both focus on her.
"He didn't show up in class this morning either; you think something happened?" Tanner says with some concern.
Tommy begins to remember last year, Elijah was late coming to work for the café. Though, he later showed up, stating he fell asleep.
"Well, wherever he is, he is over three hours late. I'm trying to be fair, but I'm running a business here," Tricia remarks frankly.
"Did you call him?" Tommy queries in an obvious manner.
Tricia flashes him a look to indicate how insane the question is. "Yeah, twice, went straight to voicemail."
"I'm going to call Lynn; maybe she knows where he is," Tanner takes out her phone to call her twin sister, who is Elijah's girlfriend.
Tommy gets out his iPhone to text his best friend when Elijah Barker walks more like stumbling into the café where he makes it over to the lounge where he sees his friends, and boss shows various reactions when they see him.
"We were about to send out a search party for you," Tanner says with relief.
"Yeah, you all right?" Tommy asks
Elijah nods. "Sorry --- I lost my keys, took forever to find them," he stammers.
Tricia, who has by now gotten closer to her employee, recognizes his current state.
"It's obvious as to why you probably lost those keys; you've been, drinking, haven't you, Barker?" Tricia responds knowingly

SAMPSON UNIVERSITY : PARKERSON DORMITORY
Aaliyah Gupta waves her Student ID to gain entry into Parkerson Dormitory, located on the west side of the university. She had worked up a sweat working out at the campus gym. Using her key to get into her room, she quickly steps in. However, she is taken aback by seeing her mother sitting at her desk.
"Mommy, what are you doing here?" Aaliyah solicits
She isn't used to her mother popping up in her room in the middle of the day. So the first thought of anyone hurt in her family or even worse made the most sense.
Standing up to her full height, Mala Gupta nods to ease her daughter's worry. "Your RA let me in on her way out."
The architect is wearing a black and white combo pullover sweater shirt with a white self-tie collar and black slacks.

"Everyone is fine, Just thought the two of us should have a chat, that's all."
"About what?" Aaliyah asks tentatively
She and her mother had never been that close to have mother and daughter conversations that end with a hug and brownies. More like tears, a slammed door, and hardly any understanding.
"Having your father write out a check for Lorenzo's education," Mala answers.
She did go to her father to obtain a check from him for $1500, so Lorenzo could stay in school due to his family's financial difficulties. After overhearing him on the phone with his mother, who couldn't afford it.
Aaliyah shakes her head, not wanting to continue this chat. "Dad told you, didn't he? I thought when you guys got divorced-
"That what, we would stop communicating about you or Samuel. Mala interjects. That is when you're wrong, Aaliyah. It doesn't matter if we're together or not; our children will always be our priority, no matter how grown you think you are."
Aaliyah wipes droplets of sweat on her forehead using a towel. "Well, I guess he also told you Lorenzo didn't take the check and dropped out of school too."
Mala already knows this keeps her composure under control.
"You cannot help someone who doesn't want it, no matter what your intentions were."
"You already think Lorenzo is some loser who is unworthy of me. You should be happy that Lorenzo and I hardly talked since I gave him the check, which he gave back to dad, by the way."
Albeit a few texts here and there, she and Lorenzo hadn't been in close contact, which she relates to him feeling embarrassed for what she did.
The Gupta matriarch grasps her designer briefcase from the tabletop of the desk. "No doubt he is a good person, but one day that is not enough to survive on."
Aaliyah does her best to hide her aggravation. "Mommy, I will talk to you later. I have tons of work to get to."
"I know I don't say it enough, but I love you, and I only have your best interests at heart," Mala says wholeheartedly.
Aaliyah opens the door to let her mother out of her room, which Mala ultimately does.
The sophomore obtains her phone in her bag to call her boyfriend, but only gets his voicemail.
"Hey, it's me; we need to talk, to see --- to see where we stand."

FRANKLIN FARM
"Someone is in a good mood," Louise Saunders Lockhart comments at her ex-husband, who is whistling.
The two were standing across from the other in the lush farmland on her family's dairy farm. The cool breeze in the air blows gently, indicating it's fall.
"Am I that predictable?" Sean chuckles
The farmer considers it over for a second. "Yeah," she replies playfully
"Tricia and I are getting our marriage back on track."
Louise recalls the two of them having issues due to Tricia withholding the truth regarding Tommy being unfaithful to their daughter. She had hoped he would've come to his senses about the woman he is married to; once again, however, he can see what is in front of him that the woman never changes.
"Well, good luck with that," she responds facetiously.
Sean could detect Louise's doubt upon her face, something he is familiar with, having been married to her for twenty years.
"We aren't one-hundred percent, but we're getting there," Sean says assuredly
"As I said, Sean, I hope you two can move on, though be sure she's being one-hundred percent sure with you."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Louise casually shrugs.
"Women like that often have a few more skeletons in their closet, that's all I'm saying."
The gust of wind picks up a little stronger in the atmosphere.
Sean changes the subject. "How are you and your fella?"
Knowing, he wants her to avoid bashing the woman who contributed to the breakdown of their marriage.
"We're doing fine," Louise answers genuinely.
Sean sees his former spouse beaming with happiness about her and Jai being together. He doesn't know why he feels uncomfortable every time Louise gets elated about him.

JOJO'S CAFE
Elijah immediately dismissed the accusation of him being drunk.
"No, I told you I couldn't find my keys," he says more convincingly.
Tricia steps closer to her employee to see for herself to verify her assumption. She turns to both Tanner and Tommy, who by now have stood up to stand next by her.
"Slurred speech, breath smells like a distillery, not to mention he's a terrible liar. Classic signs of someone spending their day drinking."
Tommy and Tanner begin to take into account what they see and hear, confirming to themselves it is the truth.
"I had a few drinks; that's all. I'm fine," Elijah lies
Tanner goes to her best friend from childhood. "What about you sit down while I get you some coffee."
Elijah moves his head. "I'm fine, Tanner -- I need to get to work."
"There is no way in hell I will risk you serving the public while you're drunk as hell, Barker."
"Please tell me you got here by cab," Tommy demands.
"I told you I only had a couple of drinks. I was completely all right driving here," Elijah admits

Tricia puts her hands onto her hips, fed up with this scene. "Someone please take him home now and tell him when he finally sobers up, he's fired."
Tommy packs up his belongings back into his backpack. "I'll take him to the dorm, so he can sleep it off."
Several questions run through Tanner's mind, mainly how a nineteen-year-old get their hands on enough alcohol to make him this drunk. Then again, it answers part of her question as to why he missed class earlier.
Tommy guides his best friend out of the café to his car parked in front of the establishment.
Tricia is back behind the counter, wondering if she should place hiring notices online soon.
"Tricia, you think firing Elijah is necessary?"
"He was over two hours late, no attempt to contact me by phone call or text, and let's not forget he came in here three sheets to the wind. Does that answer your question?"
Tanner is about to protest again when she remembers Lynn having to go pick Elijah up at some bar that served underage patrons because he got so intoxicated he couldn't drive.

"Oh my god!" Tanner says to herself.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just thought of something,"
Tanner obtains her things left in the lounge and hurriedly heads for the door when she waves to her friend and roommate, who is with her brother.

"She's in a hurry," Samuel says to his sister.
"Wonder what that was about?" Aaliyah wonders aloud
The two had decided to come here to consume caffeinated beverages and pastries. They settle on the table near the large front window overlooking Main Street.
"I'm going to order our usual, be right back," Samuel tells her.
He marches toward the counter where he sees Tricia reminding him of the kiss they shared at The Waterfall,
"This has been a day from hell," Tricia declares
"What's wrong? It isn't about what happened between us, is it?" Samuel queries nervously
"No, it isn't about that at all, but since we're on that topic, let's forget about what occurred."
Samuel gathers this is from when Sean came to him at The Waterfall when the married couple was out having dinner when her husband wanted his advice on maintaining their marriage. She instantly ended the situation, not wanting it to get out.
"You think I will go around town telling everyone I kissed a friend who's married." Samuel whispers
Tricia casts him an expression of you never know what could happen.
"It was just one kiss on a night to make that girl see what she missed out on by hooking up with Antoine. She replies. You've been a good friend to me, but I have no romantic feelings for you."
Notwithstanding, already being mindful of Tricia's true feelings about him, it was a different story hearing it said to him.
"I say you made yourself pretty clear." Samuel bitterly returns
LOCKHART LAKE COTTAGE
Lynn Lockhart enters her home after working all day on her family's farm; while on her way home, got a call from Tanner to meet her there because she has something to tell her.
"Tanner!" she shouts out to see which room she's in,
"Kitchen!"
She finds her sister in the room holding a bottle of water in her hand.

"Hey, what's up?"
"I have to tell you something you need to hear," Tanner informs her fraternal twin sister.
"This couldn't have been done by text,"
"No, not what I have to tell you, Lynn. She exhales. "I think Elijah has a serious drinking problem." Tanner intensely declares
