Last Time on Town and Country

  • Courtney kept it from Steven that Jacques had called her, even as the two had been growing closer.

  • Tommy agreed to participate in Daniel's plan to oust Jacques from the Covington Group, although unbeknownst to him, his father was also using the scheme as a means to reinstall himself as CEO and push Courtney out of the position.

  • Meanwhile, Tricia eventually convinced Jolene to leave Bakersfield and return with her to Radcliffe, in hopes of escaping Wade’s abuse.

The afternoon is now upon the town of Radcliffe. On the twentieth floor—headquarters of the Covington Group, located in the Covington Tower downtown—Jacques Laurent walks down the hall. He lightly knocks on the office door of his boss and close friend, Courtney Covington Sullivan.

Usually, her secretary Evelyn would be at her desk, but she isn’t—she’s on lunch.

He hears a faint but audible “Come in,” and opens the door to find the petite brunette businesswoman behind her desk, looking up from her desktop computer.

“Anything of importance?” he asks in his French accent.

Courtney shakes her head. “Nothing that can’t be procrastinated.”

“I wanted to see how you were doing. I know I called you out of the blue, and I know I’m not your husband’s favorite person.”

Courtney rises from her chair and approaches him casually. “I managed to handle it, although sometimes I wonder why I had to lie in the first place.”

The two had grown closer in recent years, having confided in each other about personal issues, including their respective marriages.

“So, how are things going between you and my aunt?”

Jacques shoves both hands into the pockets of his slacks. “Still the same,” he says, exasperated. “I don’t know what to do.”

She doesn’t know what comes over her, but Courtney finds herself embracing him. Jacques accepts the gesture.

Simultaneously, Tommy Covington opens the door to find his sister and their aunt’s husband in a hug, which somewhat takes him aback. Holding a tablet in his hand, Tommy gently clears his throat, causing both Jacques and Courtney to let go and turn toward the younger man.

“Am I interrupting?” he asks.

“Nothing, at all,” Courtney replies, aware that the situation likely appears less innocent than it truly is, while Jacques casts her an apologetic glance before turning around.

HOME FARM

With concentrated precision, Daniel Covington lines up another dart in his upstairs office at Home Farm Estate. He throws—only to grunt in dissatisfaction when it narrowly misses the target. The photo of Jacques, pinned to the wall, remains virtually untouched.

“Damn,” Daniel mutters under his breath. Still, the motivation to rid himself of their lives fuels him. The plan is coming together.

Just then, the door opens. In steps Deirdre Covington, her freshly styled, trademark copper-red pixie-cut as ever. She wears a black-and-white sheath dress with three-quarter-length sleeves and black pumps.

“Good, you’re here,” she says. “I need someone to discuss the situation regarding your sister.”

Despite being under the same roof, Deirdre and her daughter Emma have barely exchanged words since Emma learned the truth about her paternity—specifically, that Deirdre’s long-ago affair with Jimmy Saunders led to Emma’s birth. Though she hasn’t forgiven her, even though Deirdre herself once believed Patrick, her late husband, might have been Emma’s father.

But Deirdre falls silent when she notices Daniel’s unwavering expression—and the dartboard target.

“Perfect way to take out your frustrations, I’d say,” she quips, noticing the photo of Jacques now marred with small punctures.

Her tone shifts. The motherly concern gives way to the cool, scheming mind she’s known for. She’s not shocked by what she sees—in fact, there’s a flicker of amusement in her eyes.

“So,” she says with a knowing half-smile, “are you going to let me in on whatever it is you’re cooking up, or am I going to have to twist your arm?”

THE CHATEAU

Light piano music flows within the Chateau as a sparse number of patrons sit to dine, mostly due to it being early in the afternoon. A handful of others stand around the bar, waiting for his takeout order to be finished—among them is Sean Lockhart. The farm manager is on the phone with Louise Saunders Lockhart.

"Yes, I told them to put extra sauce on the side. Shoot, as much as they charge here, they need to sell it in a bottle," he says amusingly.

As he hears Louise respond on the other line, he lifts his head and notices Tricia Lockhart making her way to the head of the line, placing a to-go order with the bartender. His attention shifts from his first ex-wife on the phone to his second ex-wife.

"Lou, I'll call you back when I leave. Bye," he says, ending the call and casually approaching the other woman.

"Hey, welcome back," he tells her. "Were you successful in getting your mother out of there?"

He had been apprised that Tricia had gone to her hometown of Bakersfield, California, to hopefully talk some sense into her mother, Jolene, and convince her to leave the abusive situation with her husband, Wade, who had put her in the hospital yet again.

Tricia, wearing a sleeveless white button-down shirt and light blue jeans, clutching her handbag, sighs and runs a hand through her shoulder-length brown hair before responding.

"Barely," she answers. "But she did get on that plane with me, which is why I came here to get both of us some food and get some air for myself. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad she’s far away from that SOB, but you know even an hour with my mother can drive anyone up the wall."

"Well, I’m sure deep-down Jolene’s grateful to be thousands of miles away from Wade," Sean says, reassuringly.

Tricia maneuvers her shoulders in a way that conveys her limited optimism. "Anyway," she says, wanting to change the subject completely. "I hear congratulations are in order. I heard from Courtney that Lenny and Elijah tied the knot."

Sean doesn’t hide his joy at the mention.

"Yeah, one of my little girls is now a married woman—it’s still taking some getting used to. But after everything she’s been through, she deserves every bit of happiness."

Despite not being close to either of Sean’s children, Tricia knows how fearful he had been about whether or not Lenny would survive, though thankfully, a bone marrow transplant had been found.

A male bartender calls out a customer's name before either of them can say anything else.

"You alright?" Sean asks. He had been involved with Tricia too long not to notice that particular look on her face. "And before you say it isn’t anything, let me remind you that we used to be married."

She exhales deeply. "I guess I’m just preparing myself for the inevitable."

"Which is?" he asks curiously.

"That the cycle will happen again. She gets away from him. Wade decides to grow a temporary bout of conscience, which he uses to plead for forgiveness for the two-hundredth time. She feels guilty. After a few months, he gets upset over something and starts yelling and beating on her again... but this time, I don’t think she’s going to survive it."

Sean resists the urge to put his hands on her arms to calm her down. He’s now involved with Louise and isn’t sure if

Tricia would accept that gesture after everything they’ve been through.

"Look," he says gently, "I know that’s going to be on your mind but just focus on the important thing right now—that your mother is here, and Wade hasn’t caught up to her yet."

Tricia looks up at her former husband and gives a small nod.

The bartender’s voice rings out: "Orders for Sean and Tricia!"

The pair heads over to the bar to separately collect their orders. Sean turns to her. "I’m just a phone call away if you need someone to talk to."

Tricia grips the burgundy takeout bag in her hand and says, "Thanks."

The two of them walk in silence toward the exit of the restaurant.

COVINGTON GROUP

By now, Jacques is ready to excuse himself.

“I will let you two converse in private,” he says, but Tommy shuts the door, choosing to push what he witnessed—the hug—to the back of his mind.

“Actually, what I have to say includes you both,” Tommy notes.

Courtney and Jacques exchange a glance before Tommy continues.

“I know that land brokering isn’t exactly my specialty, but I happened to come across this piece of land.”

He shows them the screen. Courtney and Jacques both peer at the tablet.

Unknown to either of them, this is part of a scheme Tommy, and his father are orchestrating—setting Jacques up to be removed from the company. The land isn’t worth anything, and investing in it would mean that Jacques wastes corporate funds.

“I must admit, it does have potential,” Courtney says, her tone uncertain.

“But I’m not sure we should invest in anything out of state.”

She sees that the property is located in Miami, Florida.

Jacques takes the tablet from Tommy’s hand. “Well, perhaps this one should be considered.”

Courtney remains unconvinced, while Tommy plays it carefully.

“If the land survey turns up anything noteworthy, I think it’s worth a shot,” Jacques adds. “Which I will put together myself.”

“I’m sure Jacques would put 110% into it. Besides, it would give Covington another leg up,” Tommy says, pushing the plan forward.

Jacques is surprised that the nepo baby is backing him, though at the moment, he could use the support.

Courtney takes the tablet and looks at the expansive land, then glances between the two men in the office. “I’m giving the go-ahead on the land survey,” she says. Then, she handed the device to her brother.

“So, Tommy, if you can email me the details, I’ll get on it as soon as I can,” Jacques says—more of a command than a request.

He then exits the office.

Tommy turns to his sister. Although guilt nags at him—especially knowing she may be caught in the crossfire—he knows this is the only way to finally get Jacques out.

“Everything okay?” he asks, referring to the embrace he saw earlier between her and Jacques.

"Why wouldn't it not be?" Courtney brushes it off. “I need to get back to work.”

Tommy nods and walks away, satisfied that the plan—covertly crafted with his father—is finally moving forward.

HOME FARM

By now, Daniel remains silent while his mother places her perfectly manicured hands on her hips.

“Oh, come on now, this is me you’re talking to. I think I’m the one person you can confide in about whatever you’re planning to do to remove that locust of a man from our lives.”

Daniel knows his mother will keep trying to pick his brain, so he decides to let her in, begrudgingly.

“A plan is in motion as we speak,” he says, lowering his voice despite the office door being shut. “Let’s just say if it goes successfully, not only will Jacques be ousted from the company, but yours truly will be back where I belong—as CEO.”

The Covington Group board voted Daniel out after Jordan revealed he had gaslit her to help Tommy gain full custody of Jeremy.

“I gather Courtney isn’t aware of any of this,” Deirdre assumes.

“Not at all,” he remarks. “Look, you know how much I love my daughter, but she has no business running the company, especially this soon, not when I was unjustly voted out. And Tommy and I have decided to put our differences aside, for the time being, to make sure it happens.”

Deirdre folds her arms. “Thomas is more like you than you realize. And you know I adore my granddaughter too—but if she had it her way, he’d be COO of Covington by the end of the year,” she adds.

Daniel narrows his regard at his mother. “That will not happen,” he says with resolve.

Deirdre lays her eyes on the desk, picks up a dart, and with efficient force, throws it, hitting Jacques squarely between the eyes in the photo.

Daniel opens his mouth, forming an incredulous gaze. “Who knew you had it in you, Mother?”

A sparkle of satisfied delight falls across her face. “It’s all in the wrist,” she says matter-of-factly.

Daniel comments. “Too bad no one will do that to him,” darkly hinting at his resentment.
