Last Time on Town and Country

  • Daniel and Tommy remain determined to scheme to oust Jacques from the Covington Group; however, Jordan has begun noticing their secret meetings.

  • Lenny witnessed Sean and Tricia together at The Waterfall, leaving her to question whether his attention is drifting away from Louise.

  • Martha and her band have been invited to perform at The Chateau.

  • Steven and Courtney’s issues continue to surface.

  • Meanwhile, Jacques and Aaliyah unexpectedly shared a kiss.

A week or so has passed in Radcliffe when Daniel Covington presses the doorbell of the guest house where his youngest son and family live on the sweeping estate, they all reside on. After a moment, he finally hears the door open, and—expectedly—Tommy Covington lets him inside the two-story house. Tommy shuts the door behind him as the two men stand across from one another in the living room.

 

“So, catch me up to speed with the latest,” Daniel remarks, the older man wearing a long dark coat over his casual dress attire.

 

“It seems things will soon be exposed,” Tommy says. “Courtney, Aaliyah, and Jacques are heading to Miami, and they’ll discover this ‘majestic property’ is nothing but swampland. Then we’ll be one step closer to removing Jacques Laurent from the company for good.”

 

Daniel had come up with the plan to oust Jacques by having him invest in worthless land in Miami—something Jacques remains unaware of because Tommy has been feeding him false information.

 

Daniel smirks, nearly satisfied. “It’s a shame I won’t be there to see the expression on that pompous jackass’s face.”

 

Though he keeps one thing from his son: Daniel’s motivations run deeper. He isn’t only after Jacques—he wants to reclaim his former position as CEO.

 

Tommy places his hands behind his back as a flicker of doubt settles on his face. “Look, I know we’re doing this because of Jacques, but this will also affect Courtney since she’s CEO.”

 

“Trust me—it won’t,” Daniel says confidently. “Jacques is the one leading the charge, so he’ll receive the worst of it.”

 

Before Tommy can press him further, the front door opens. Jordan Covington enters with their son, Jeremy.

 

While the little boy remains oblivious to what is happening, the young woman—who has caught Tommy and Daniel meeting in secret before—can’t help being suspicious once again.

 

“Hey, what are you two doing back?” Tommy asks.

 

“I forgot my seashells for show-and-tell,” the blond boy with cherubic cheeks says.

 

Jordan, in her wrap coat, puts her hands on her hips while her purse dangles from her shoulder. “Luckily, he said something before we got on the road.”

 

Daniel steps toward his grandson, enamored as always since he doesn’t get to see him as often as he’d like. “Morning, buddy.”

 

Jeremy switches his gaze between his parents before finally responding, almost as though giving them silent permission.

 

“Hi.”

 

Feeling the awkwardness thickening, Tommy steps in.

 

“Come on, Jere, let’s go find those shells.”

 

Father and son eventually disappear upstairs. Left alone, Jordan and Daniel exchange a look. Her polite smirk masks the tension still simmering beneath the surface between the two in-laws.

Meanwhile, only feet away on the estate inside the mansion, Emma Covington Laurent descends down the grand staircase wearing a burgundy red blazer with a dark blouse and slacks, with her hair hanging in waves, carrying her carryall bag into the living room, which is expertly decorated for the holidays, including a massive, tall tree with festive lights and new ornaments.

 

She enters the expansive dining room to grab a bite to eat before heading out for the day; however, she instantly regrets it when she spots her mother sitting at the head of the otherwise empty table, albeit with platters of breakfast items prepared by the kitchen staff.

 

Emma rolls her eyes, irritated to see her, as she is reminded of her ongoing issues with her mother.

 

A part of her wants to turn on her heels, but Deirdre catches her.

 

"You do not have to rush off; I mean, it's been a while since the two of us have been in a room alone," the millionaire widow states.

 

“You finally caught on,” Emma retorts sarcastically.

 

Deirdre takes a sip of her mimosa before responding, “Look, I acknowledge that a lot has occurred in the last several months.”

 

Emma pours herself some coffee. “That's an understatement.”

 

She thinks of finding out not only that her biological father wasn't Patrick Covington but Jimmy Saunders, which her mother claims she hadn't known since she slept with both men despite being married to Patrick, and it only came out because of life and death, literally.

 

“Emma, all that I'm trying to say is that all of the hostility you have for me is not productive.”

 

The statement out of the blue makes Emma cackle dismissively at her mother’s attempt to make peace.

FRANKLIN FARM

The telltale signs of winter are fast approaching throughout Radcliffe—the plummeting temperatures, the dusting of snow covering the leaves on the ground. Yet the smell of hay and silage still lingers in the air, and daily farm activities in the region continue, including those at Franklin Farm, where Sean Lockhart is currently repairing one of the fences, knowing it needs to be completed before the brunt of winter arrives.

 

The farm manager is satisfied with the progress. Sean reaches into the pocket of his brown flannel-lined coat for his iPhone, pulling it out as he steps aside, away from the wind, so he can contact someone specifically.

 

Several unanswered rings later, he hears the voicemail greeting and clears his throat lightly.

 

"Hey, it's me," he says in a concerned yet protective tone. "I was calling to see how you were doing… Look, I know you already know this, but I'm sorry I wasn't able to get him to leave. But I just wanted to see how you and your mother are doing. All right, if you get time, call me back; if not, I just wanted to see how you were. Bye."

 

He ends the call to his ex-wife, whom he met with at The Waterfall the other day. She had asked him to confront her abusive stepfather and get him to leave town; however, it seemed that wouldn't be happening despite Sean getting somewhat physical with the man. He can’t help but feel guilty for not being able to do more, knowing Tricia wants him out of her mother's life for good.

 

"Couldn't resist, could you?" a familiar feminine voice calls out from behind.

 

Sean turns around to see his daughter, Lenny Barker, wearing an oversized cotton jacket and a black skull hat covering her neck-length blonde hair. What stands out most, however, is the disappointment written all over her face—something he hasn't seen in a long time.

 

Lenny cuts straight to the chase. “What’s going on?”

 

Sean, caught off guard, replies cautiously, "What do you mean?"

 

“Whatever this thing is between you and Tricia,” she says, an edge in her voice. She adds, “Guessing Mom doesn’t know about it,” making her suspicion clear.

 

Sean reacts, stunned—caught between denial and confusion.

As the morning continues, Courtney Covington Sullivan, dressed for the day, walks down the stairs of the two-story residential cottage she lives in with her husband and stepson.

 

She makes her way into the kitchen, where she sees Steven Sullivan, in a button-down shirt and jeans, placing dishes into the dishwasher.

 

She approaches, sensing heaviness in his mood.

 

“If you have something to say, go ahead,” she remarks.

 

The two haven't had a deep conversation since he came to her office on the day she also had a meeting with Jacques, when he came to her about the difficulty he's having with his son.

 

Steven shuts the door of the appliance before speaking. “I guess I have to admit I caught you at a bad time… It's just that I still don't feel like I know my son anymore,” he admits.

 

“Steven, as I said before, he is a teenager now. I'm sure he doesn’t let a whole lot of people in at the moment, which has nothing to do with you,” Courtney says encouragingly.

 

Steven gives a small head bob, as if he somewhat understands what she’s getting at but still has reservations. “Yeah, but I wonder if it would be different if I had been more a part of his life when he was younger. Other than a yearly visit and video calls, I'm not exactly father of the year, Court.”

 

Courtney can see the true emotion on his face, which makes her slip her arm through his supportively, and he reciprocates. “Just give him time to come around.”

 

Steven exhales deeply. “I guess we'd better take advantage of having a night out together for Martha’s show,” he says of his cousin, who’s performing at The Chateau next week.

 

“I guess this might not be the best time to tell you this,” Courtney notes.

 

“What?” Steven asks, curious.

 

​“I will be traveling to Miami the week after next with Aaliyah Gupta and Jacques to check out the land he purchased for the company,” she explains.

 

It becomes clear he’s not enthused to hear Jacques’ name, since he's already not fond of the guy who is close with his wife.

 

Courtney challenges him, removing her arm from his. “Is it because I’m going out of town—or because of who I’m going with?”

 

“Oh, it’s Jacques being part of this trip, I don’t like. And it's coming close to Christmas, which I thought we would be celebrating together this year with Evan, too.”

 

“Was this your suggestion to go to Miami, or was it…?”

 

The look on his wife's face says all he needs to know.

 

“Steven—” she starts.

 

But he interrupts her.

 

“You might not want to see it, but Jacques sees you as more than his boss.”

 

“Well, if there is any admiration, it is solely on his end,” Courtney states. “But he is married to Emma, and I’m married to you. It is simply business, Steven!”

 

“If only you would make the same kind of effort you do for Jacques to connect with this family.” Steven discloses.

 

Courtney glares at him, taken aback by what he said, while tucking a strand of her long brown hair behind her ear. “I mean no offense to your son, but he is not exactly gung-ho to have anything to do with us. And to be honest, I think we should not say anything else that we cannot take back.”

 

With that, Courtney heads out of the kitchen toward the front door, the tension unresolved on both ends, leaving Steven conflicted.

THE CHATEAU

Eager to escape the brisk weather, Jacques Laurent enters the restaurant to pick up breakfast takeout before heading to the office, knowing he has secured a successful business deal that is set to make his wife's family's company even more money.

 

As he makes a beeline toward the bar, he hears acoustic singing, which makes him lift his head to notice Martha Saunders on the stage, mic in hand, belting out lyrics to a song he isn't familiar with.

 

As he watches, he drifts into thoughts of Emma and Aaliyah and how the emotional distance between him and his wife has made him seek out any affection, including getting closer to his wife's niece Courtney—and going one step above by kissing his assistant, which he does not have any regrets over.

 

Seconds later, while waiting for his takeout at the bar, he somewhat returns to reality as he sees Martha putting down the mic and hopping off stage. Before he knows it, he randomly calls out her name, which makes the singer trepidatiously come over to him. She’s surprised—shown in her expression—since she doesn’t know her newfound aunt’s husband all that well.

 

The two greet each other casually since neither one has ever talked to the other before now.

 

Perhaps wanting a distraction from his own sordid thoughts.

 

“You’re moonlighting as a lounge singer now, too?” he says, mostly as a way to soften things between them.

 

Martha finds herself chuckling softly before answering. “Well, only just for one night. My band and I are booked to perform next week.”

 

Jacques nods somewhat impressively. “Congratulations.”

 

“I know it isn't the Opry, but we all gotta start somewhere,” Martha notes.

 

Then it hits him.

 

Jacques places his hands into his trench coat pockets. “I know you and Emma are not close, but I think I should bring her and make it an evening for just the two of us.”

 

“Funny you should say that; the morning I got the call to perform, I saw your wife and told her about it, saying she should come with you.”

 

She recalls that conversation at the café when she was with Will and Emma, and they traded barbs; clearly, she isn't keen on Emma dating her ex.

 

“Martha, I don't know whether you are aware of it or not, but Emma and I are having some problems within our marriage, and I don't know exactly what to do to make things better,” he admits.

 

“Jacques, it depends on your own barometer, but from someone who never had a relationship that got close to engagement, let alone marriage—if you want to work it out, you have to at least be there for her. I mean, most women feel the safest when they have someone by their side,” Martha says with a wry tone.

 

“Oh god,” she says in realization. “I just said something in defense of Emma; please don't tell her, or she would never let it go.”

 

Jacques winks. “Our little secret.”

 

“Laurent!” one of the bartenders calls out from behind the bar.

 

“Looks like your order is up,” Martha notes.

 

“I did not mean to talk your ear off, as you Americans say,” he states.

 

Martha waves one hand dismissively. “It’s alright. I hope to see you both here together.”

 

With that, the businessman walks over to obtain his food.

Deirdre sits at the breakfast table, her tone firm but polished. “Despite everything, Emma, I am still your mother. But we cannot go on like this."

 

Emma shakes her head, her voice clipped. “Of course. This is all about you.”

 

“We are still family. You cannot sever that tie, no matter how much you cling to the Saunders."

 

As of late, the millionaire businesswoman had been connecting with some members of her biological paternal side of the family.

 

Deirdre presses on, her voice softening while she rises to her full height. “I care about you. You can be open with me.”

 

Emma lets out a dry laugh. “Really? Should I come to you to discuss the state of my marriage while we are at it, too, Mother?”

 

Deirdre hesitates before admitting, “Maybe not.” She recovers quickly. “But you do deserve better than that opportunist you are attached to."

 

Emma glares. “Not this again." She hates herself for even bringing the conversation up since she knows her mother does not approve of her marriage to Jacques. Even though they have their issues, she does not need anyone to tell her about her life choices, including her marriage.

 

“He’s not the man you think he is,” Deirdre continues. Inwardly, she recalls how she herself lured Jacques back to town years ago, a memory she doesn’t voice aloud. Outwardly, she finishes with cool certainty: “You deserve better.”

 

Emma’s thoughts flash, uninvited, to Will—only to shut them down as quickly as they come.

 

Her phone buzzes inside her purse, which she retrieves, relieved at the interruption. “Hi, Sarah Lynn, no, you didn't catch me at a bad time."

 

Deirdre rolls her eyes as Emma chats, the conversation turning to Martha’s upcoming show. Deirdre mutters a snide remark under her breath about Martha, her jealousy obvious. Emma smirks at the pettiness, sensing the envy of her mother’s bitterness toward her late half-brother’s wife.

 

She soon takes another drink of her coffee before sauntering out of the room.

 

Deirdre watches her go, then takes a slow, deliberate sip of her mimosa. Alone again, she mutters under her breath, “One way or another, you will see the kind of man you are really married to."

Eventually, Daniel decides to break the silence between himself and the mother of his firstborn grandchild.

 

“Is it just me, or did Jeremy grow a few more inches since the last time I saw him?”

 

Jordan shoots back, sharp and direct. “Imagine if you hadn’t gaslit me. Then you’d have access to him—but you don’t.”

 

Daniel scoffs, gladly dropping the pretense. “That’s all in the past. My son’s suffering now shackled in this marriage because you make him feel like he has to protect you. But you and I both know you’re no victim.”

 

Years earlier, Daniel had orchestrated the plan to gaslight Jordan into believing she was unfit to raise Jeremy—something later exposed when her psychiatrist admitted he had been part of Daniel’s scheme to drive her out of her mind so Tommy could gain custody.

 

Jordan smirks coolly, her eyes flicking toward the staircase to check if Tommy and Jeremy are returning. “I think it’s safe to say you’ve roped my husband into whatever you’re conjuring up. I don’t know what it is but trust me—I won’t let you hurt my family.”

 

Daniel leans in, his voice icy. “Careful. You’re starting to sound like you might need another stay in a mental health facility.”

 

Jordan bristles, ready to fire back—when footsteps interrupt.

 

Jeremy and Tommy come down the stairs, the boy clutching the object in his hand.

 

“Who knew a toy chest would be the perfect place for seashells?” Tommy says.

 

“I’m ready for school now!” Jeremy announces proudly.

 

Jordan answers warmly, “Okay, let’s go.”

 

Daniel bends down to his grandson. "You are always welcome at the house if ever you want to spend time with your grandfather.”

 

Jordan rolls her eyes while Tommy tries hard not to respond.

 

Jeremy glances between his parents again, uncertain.

 

“We’ll talk about it later,” Tommy tells him gently.

 

He hugs his son, then Jeremy and Jordan head out the door.

 

Once they’re gone, Daniel turns back to Tommy. “Keep me apprised.”

 

Tommy steel himself. “After Jacques is out of the company… our association is done.”

 

Daniel nods as though accepting this—but privately, he’s already planning a second strike: pushing Courtney out of the CEO position so he can reclaim it for himself.

 

He adds, “Life’s short. After all you have been through, you deserve some happiness, son.”

 

Tommy can’t help thinking of his emotional affair with Tanner—wanting more yet knowing exactly why he can’t have it.

 

He walks his father to the door, sees him out, then stands alone in the quiet house before heading upstairs to finish getting ready for the office.

FRANKLIN FARM

Sean isn't exactly sure where his daughter's hostility is coming from as the two remain standing on the relatively quiet farm, save for the wind and the distant sounds of animals shifting in their shelters.

 

“I was just checking in on Tricia. She’s going through a tough time right now,” he says casually. “Nothing else is going on, okay?”

 

“It didn’t seem like that when Elijah and I saw you two together at The Waterfall. Dad, what are you doing?” Lenny drops the pretense, her voice firm.

 

The other day, she and her husband had seen Sean and Tricia together, and ever since, she has suspected something more is going on despite him now being involved with her mother again. As much as she wanted to tell Louise what she saw, Elijah advised her to hear the truth directly from her father first.

 

Sean exhales, his breath visible in the cold air as he realizes where she’s coming from.

 

“Look, Lenny, Tricia is dealing with some personal family struggles and just needed someone to listen—that’s all.”

 

He deliberately avoids sharing the deeper truth, thinking it isn’t his to tell.

 

“That’s how it starts,” Lenny fires back. “And before you know it, you’re hurting Mom all over again.”

 

Even though Lenny is now an adult—a married woman—Sean can’t help but see her in this moment as still the young girl his selfishness hurt, along with her sister, when he stepped outside his marriage to Louise and got involved with Tricia all those years ago.

 

“Relationships are complicated, and what Tricia and I have been through together will always connect us,” he says, thinking of their late son, Dylan. “But let’s get one thing straight, Lynn—I have always loved your mother, okay? It might have taken me time to realize I took her for granted, but I love her more than you can ever know.”

 

Lenny nods, knowing her father only calls her by her full name when she’s crossed a line. Still, she can’t shake the feeling that something is happening—whether he sees it or not.

 

“I will tell your mother everything when I can,” he insists. “And as you get older, you'll learn relationships aren’t always black and white.”

 

“I just don’t want Mom hurt again. That’s all,” Lenny says quietly, the worry finally surfacing beneath her frustration.

 

Internally, Sean recalls holding Tricia’s hand at The Waterfall, though he knows nothing else will come from that—because he loves Louise and wants to be with her.

 

Lenny folds her arms across her chest. “Well, Dad, you better tell Mom what you told me as soon as you can, because from what I’ve seen over the years, stuff like that tends to explode in your face.”

 

Sean sighs deeply, standing alone with the weight of it all.
