March 25, 2024

Last Time on Town and Country

  • Dr. Grier revealed to Lynn that she has acute myeloid leukemia and must undergo chemotherapy, which stunned Lynn, Elijah, Sean, and Louise.

  • An emotional Tanner, finding out the news of her sister's diagnosis, found comfort in Tommy, who helped console her.

  • Esther and Steven have been hiding the truth surrounding Emma's biological ties to them as a result of the sordid affair between Jimmy Saunders and Deirdre Covington over thirty years ago.

FRANKLIN FARM

Needing the distraction of work, Lynn Lockhart finds herself cleaning the horse shed on her maternal family's farm this morning. But five minutes hardly pass when she doesn't think about the fact that she has been diagnosed with cancer.

It still doesn't feel surreal since she thought she had the flu last year. However, they were symptoms of leukemia, which she has, and according to her doctor, she must undergo chemotherapy right away since the one she has can be rapid within the body.

Hearing the diagnosis from Dr. Grier with her parents and boyfriend in the room also made her feel weak, an emotion she despises expressing, especially in front of people, even if it's her loved ones.

The farmhand wears her long blonde hair in a messy ponytail, a black ombre plaid shirt jacket, a black t-shirt, and dark overalls and boots, disinfecting the floor to start scrubbing with a brush, hoping to suppress it all if possible.

FRANKLIN FARM: MAIN HOUSE

Trying to diffuse the solemn mood within the main house on Franklin Farm, Sarah Lynn Saunders pours the kettle of the hot liquid into two mugs, which she carries over to the kitchen table, passing one to her eldest daughter, who looks a bit emotional from the last few days, attempting to come to terms with Lynn's cancer diagnosis.

"This tea should calm your nerves," Sarah Lynn says positively.

"Thanks, mom," the late-fortysomething responds modestly. "Though I think I could do with something stronger."

At the same time, Sean Lockhart enters the room through the side door, having overheard his ex-wife, whom he's pursuing again despite still being married as he hadn't signed the divorce papers yet.

"I'll second that," he says.

"Sean, would you like some tea?" she poses to her former son-in-law.

"I'll take some."

The older blonde woman gets up from the table while she fixes another cup while he sits at the table. She then returns with the mug, which he graciously accepts.

"I can't even imagine what you two are going through right now." Sarah Lynn notes.

Louise shakes her head, trying to find the right words.

"I told Lynn that she didn't have to come to work today, but she insisted. I wish she would take it easy."

Sean takes a sip of his tea. "Lenny is going to need all of her stubbornness to get through the

"When does she start chemotherapy?" Sarah Lynn questions them.

"Next week," Louise answers. "We're going to her first one together; hopefully, we will get a better estimate of how many treatments she needs."

"According to Heidi, this oncologist Lenny's got is one of the best in the area, so fingers crossed," he states optimistically.

Sarah Lynn takes a sip of her beverage. "Well, don't worry about this place; Lenny's overall health comes first," Sarah Lynn comments. "I'm going to go out and get some air."

As the Saunders matriarch excuses herself to step out of the room, Sean and Louise trade looks of uncertainty between them, not knowing what's ahead of them regarding their daughter as he clasps onto her hands for strength, which she doesn't deny.

FIRST STREET METHODIST CHURCH

As Jeremy Camp's newest single plays on Spotify from his laptop in his office inside First Street Methodist Church, Presley McKnight concentrates on the screen, which sits about half of his sermon for this upcoming Sunday for youth day. Joel entrusted him to speak to the younger members of the congregation, which he is setting out to do as he wants to spread faith in his message to them. He does not want to solely throw in theology to alienate those who aren't necessarily spiritual.

While continuing to type on his Word document, a tepid knock on the door takes his eyes off the device and onto the person standing in the doorway.

"I'm not interrupting, am I?" Tanner Lockhart asks lowly.

The twenty-something woman is in a black softshell jacket unzipped enough to reveal a grey long-sleeve shirt and dark denim blue jeans holding onto her purse.

"No, not at all," he says while pausing the music.

It doesn't take long for her to rush to him as he embraces her. It doesn't take long to see the emotional state she's in over the news of her twin sister being diagnosed with leukemia.

RADCLIFFE ANIMAL CLINIC AND SHELTER

Steven Sullivan walks out of the examination room and over to the waiting area of the local animal clinic and shelter, where he runs. At the same time, a white woman in her mid-thirties with shoulder-length light brown hair and a girl with darker hair who had to be around eight stands up with anticipation as they see the veterinarian approaching them, holding on to their cat.

"Well, like I suspected, it's a sprain, but luckily, Ulysses doesn't need surgery," Steven informs them while the American shorthair cat purrs in his arms.

"Thank goodness," the woman responds as the little girl stretches her arm to pat the feline.

Concurrently, Esther Saunders saunters into the clinic to see her son in the middle of speaking to the mother and daughter.

"Come back in a few weeks so I can take the splint off his leg," he says while he gives the cat to the little girl with a smile on her face.

"Don't scare me like that again," she says sweetly, which makes the adults chuckle.

"What do you say to Dr. Sullivan?" the mother notes.

"Thank you,"

"You're most certainly welcome,"

The mother and daughter and their pet leave the clinic as Steven waves at them. It is then that he spots his mother coming towards him.

He hugs his mother, whom he is surprised to see.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" he greets her.

The short-statured blonde woman lets go of her adult son. "I've got some not-so-good to tell you," she discloses

"We can talk in my office,"

He leads her to the back of the clinic, where his office is, and he lets her into the room, closing the door behind her.

"What's going on?"

"It's no easy way to say this; Lynn has cancer, leukemia," Esther answers.

He stands in front of his desk, crossing his arms onto his chest, taking in the shocking news of his young cousin.

"Oh no," he says subduedly.

"We all need to be in Lynn's corner more than ever," Esther says vehemently. "Some people have all the damn luck," she adds.

"Who in particular are you referring to?"

Esther shakes her head somewhat in amusement.

"Lynn is so full of life, and now she must face her mortality at such a young age while the Covington's lie, cheat, and gaslight, but of course, they don't suffer any of the consequences," she says in her distinctive southern drawl.

Steven is fully aware of his mother's longstanding dislike of the Covington's' although he expresses her slight exaggeration of the situation on his face.

"I understand where you're coming from, but don't forget that my wife is part of the family," he reminds her.

"Well, that might be true, but let's not forget she's running her family's company and has befriended Jacques Laurent who

I hear from Mae he and Emma did a little somethin' somethin' behind Will's back."

Steven is now at his desk, standing in front of the chair. "All the things Daniel has done, he wasn't fit to run the business, and when it comes to Jacques and my wife, well, I trust her."

"But not Lumière am I right?" Esther inserts.

"All I'm saying is that we should be putting our energy into Lynn's recovery, not questioning why Daniel and Deirdre get away with the crap they get away with. And it's not like we're completely squeaky clean ourselves."

Esther gives him a look, as she knows he's talking about them keeping the revelation of Emma being biologically their blood relation due to Esther's father's affair with Deirdre over thirty years ago.

"That is completely different; we didn't drive anyone out of their minds nor possibly hide a paternity secret for three decades because of the fear of tarnishing her social standing."

"I'll let you get back to work; I will call you later."

"Yeah, and mom, I love you."

"I love you too, darling,"

The blonde woman steps out of the office, exiting the clinic.

Steven gazes at a picture on the desk of his wife taken at the hotel pool when they were in Hawaii when Sean and Tricia got married in 2020. And then his eyes lay on the one of his son Evan taken last year for his fifth-grade photos, as he can't believe he will be going to middle school soon making him grateful for their health.

BARKER RESIDENCE

Despite having an edible breakfast in front of him, Elijah Barker barely could bring himself to consume anything as he sat at the table in the dining room of the two-story home he grew up in and still resides with his parents. Thoughts of his girlfriend being diagnosed with leukemia is still affecting him emotionally, as he had hoped, it turned out to be something less serious.

As he runs his fork through his scrambled eggs, Brynn Barker strolls out of the kitchen, spotting her son not eating, which brings a sense of concern to her.

"You should at least have a bite of something," Brynn advises.

"I don't have much of an appetite."

By now, the red-haired woman in her late fifties, wearing a blue scalloped stitch sweater with dark slacks, sits adjacently from her son.

"I know with everything going on, it is a lot on you. And like your father and I said, if there is anything Lynn or her family needs, it still stands."

He had been there when the doctor informed her, along with Sean and Louise, and in all of the years, he had never seen her so scared of anything until now.

"It isn't fair," he declares.

Brynn can see how much of this is deeply felt by her son, the opposite of his usual demeanor. "I know, but the doctors know now what it is, and they can work to get this horrible illness out of her. And with all of the breakthroughs in cancer treatments over the years, I'm sure it will happen."

When the two first started dating, Brynn had some reservations since, at the time, Lynn was acting out due to her parent's divorce, but over the years, she saw how much she had matured, which made her realize she was a good person.

"I want to rush out of here and be with her, but I don't want to invade her personal space right now."

"I'm sure she would not think of you wanting to be with her as invading her space. She can use all the love and support she can get, which you're a good source of." She replies straightforwardly. "But you also need to take care of yourself too."

Elijah sways his head, sure somewhat of what his mother is trying to convey.

The high school principal places her hands on her son's, as she used to when he was younger, when he needed to hear something important.

"Have you been tempted to drink?"

Elijah exhales while leaning back into the chair. "No, I haven't, but if there is a time, I guess it would be now."

For three years, the college senior has been sober.

"At least go to a meeting today because if you aren't well, then you won't be any good to anyone, especially Lynn." Brynn verbalizes.

"I will get to one in about an hour, okay?" Elijah concedes while starting to eat.

FIRST STREET METHODIST CHURCH

Bailee-Madison-HS.jpg

It's obvious to Presley that his girlfriend has been crying about Lynn, as her eyes are red and puffy.

"I should've rescheduled that test and been with her instead when Dr. Grier gave her the results," she confesses.

She dwells on the fact that instead of postponing her physiology exam and coming with Lenny to be there when she got the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia, her mother called her to tell her she lost it. Tommy saw her crying in her car in the campus parking lot and consoled her, creating a twinge of guilt for letting her ex-boyfriend be the one to comfort her.

"I know you're worried about your sister, but you can't go back and change what didn't happen. You can only focus on the now because she will need you to get her through this battle."

Tanner runs her hand through her hair and emits a deep breath. "I feel so selfish," she voices. "I mean, the only thing I have to worry about is the next month and a half of college, then graduation, while Lenny has to look forward to chemotherapy, and..." she stops herself from adding more negativity to her statement.

"The chemo will do what needs it done so Lenny can have a clean bill of health, so we have to keep believing in that and praying for it," he tells her.

Tanner gives him a look of unsureness before responding to her boyfriend.

"I know it is probably blasphemous to admit this in a church, but I have never been religious."

Presley nods at her with ease. "Hope and a positive attitude go a long way too," he points out.

FRANKLIN FARM

Lenny is cleaning one of the stalls in the horse shed when she hears another set of footsteps approaching her. When she sees who it is, she keeps working, desiring to ignore the conversation.

"Trying to take your mind off of things by trying to distract yourself—trust me, I get it, but you'll learn you can't outrun your problems," Sarah Lynn says to her granddaughter.

"So, what am I supposed to do to break down and ask why God is punishing me? Because it's not going to happen."

Lenny asks while continuing to spray the solution in the empty stall while wiping.

Sarah Lynn recognizes the same type of resilient personality in her that she had, especially after Peter died, and she tried to carry on, not wanting to deal with her pain. Eventually, it affected her so much that she needed professional help. She doesn't want the same fate for her granddaughter, either.

"I can't fall apart, Grandma," Lenny reveals to her. "I will beat this," she says with a doubt of unsureness.

Sarah Lynn gives a concerned glance at the younger woman. "It's all right for you to fall apart; no one would think you're weak if you did, honey."

Her namesake departs the stall and is enveloped by her grandmother.

"It's going to be okay; I got you, honey." Sarah Lynn consoles her.

The tears stream down Lenny's face while she is in her grandmother's arms, not knowing what will happen as she goes through the biggest fight of her life.
